Google Search Console

Google Search Console impressions in the MacBook notch

Impressions count how often your site appeared in Google results, whether or not anybody scrolled far enough to see it.

Appearing is not being seen

An impression is recorded when a link to your site is present on a results page. For a result sitting at position thirty, that usually means nobody ever looked at it. Impressions therefore measure how much Google is willing to show you, not how much attention you got.

That makes impressions the leading signal of the three. New pages collect impressions before they collect clicks, and a page whose impressions are climbing while clicks stay flat is ranking better without ranking well enough.

The same lag, and the same gaps

Search Console settles over two to three days, so the newest buckets read low. Queries with very few impressions are withheld entirely for privacy, so the totals in any breakdown add up to less than the headline figure. A query missing from the data is not proof of no demand.
