Shopify average order value in the MacBook notch

Average order value is sales divided by orders, and the headline figure is not the average of the points in the sparkline.

Why the headline and the chart disagree

Each point in the sparkline is that day's own ratio. The headline is the window's sales divided by the window's orders. A quiet day with one expensive order produces a very high point and contributes almost nothing to the headline, which is the correct weighting and the reason the two look inconsistent.

If you want the average of the daily ratios, that is a different number and it is not the one anybody means by AOV.

What moves it

Three things, and they call for different responses. Price rises move it evenly. Bundling and upsells move it for the orders that take them. A single wholesale order moves it for one day and then it falls back.

Place orders and sales beside it before acting on a change, because AOV rising while orders fall is a smaller, richer customer base rather than a win.
