Shopify customers in the MacBook notch
Customers is the total ever recorded on the store, which makes it the one Shopify number that only goes up.
A lifetime total, not a window
Every other Shopify widget reports activity inside a window. This one reports the size of the customer list as it stands, so the window selector does not change it and the widget carries no sparkline.
It counts every customer record the store holds, including people who ordered once in 2021 and never returned. It is a measure of how many people have ever bought, not of how many still would.
What to place beside it
New customers, for the flow into this total. The ratio between the two over a month is roughly how fast the list is growing, and a large total with a thin flow is a store living on its past.
Deleted customer records are gone from this figure. Shopify removes them rather than marking them, so a GDPR erasure request reduces a number that otherwise never falls.
What Shopify customers means, exactly
Every customer record on the store right now, which is what the admin's Customers page counts. Shopify reports this as an estimate above ten thousand.
