Shopify new customers in the MacBook notch

New customers are first-time buyers in the window, counted by when their first order was placed.

First order, not first account

Shopify records a customer when an order is placed, whether or not anybody created an account. The widget counts customers whose first order falls in the window, so somebody who browsed for a month and bought today is new today.

A customer who buys again later is not counted again. That is what separates this from the orders widget and what makes the pair readable: orders rising faster than new customers means your existing buyers are coming back.

The limit worth knowing

Shopify identifies a returning customer by email and by account. A shopper who checks out as a guest with a different email every time is a new customer every time, which quietly inflates this number on stores with no account requirement. Read the direction rather than the absolute figure.

What Shopify new customers means, exactly

Customer records created in the window. Shopify creates one at checkout, so a guest who buys twice counts once. Somebody who only signed up for the newsletter counts too.

A whole number.
